How to install Q-emuLator
Q-emuLator works best if you copy the package to your hard disk. This is especially important if the package is on CD-ROM, as the emulator must reside on writable media.
Q-emuLator doesn't include the QL rom for copyright reasons, but the rom is necessary to run QL emulator sessions. Therefore, the first thing to do is to either copy the rom from your QL to a QL-formatted 3.5" floppy disk, or obtain a rom image from the Internet.
Getting the rom from a plain QL
If you have a plain QL (for Gold Card and Super Gold Card QLs go to the following paragraph), to copy the rom onto the disk (assuming that it has been inserted in FLP1), type the following command on your QL:
sbytes flp1_rom_name, 0, 49152
where 'rom_name' is the name that you want to give to the file. It is better if the name contains the word 'rom' as a substring; for example I use 'QL_ROM_JS' for the name of my QL rom (version JS) image file.
Skip the following paragraph, intended for users with a QL with a Miracle's card, and read about how to install the rom image in Q-emuLator from the floppy disk.
Getting the rom from a QL with Gold Card or Super Gold Card
If you have a QL with the Gold Card or Super Gold Card installed, instead of just a plain QL, the 'sbytes' command won't work because it gets an altered rom image instead of the original code. In this case you have to unplug the card first, copy the rom onto a microdrive cartridge (with the 'sbytes mdv1_rom_name, 0, 49152' command), then plug in again the card and finally copy the file from the microdrive to a floppy disk ('copy mdv1_rom_name to flp1_rom_name').
Finishing the installation
Now you have to install the rom in Q-emuLator, on your Macintosh.
Start the Q-emuLator application by double-clicking on its icon.
Insert the QL disk with the rom image file in the Macintosh drive, and select either the FLP1 or the FLP2 button in the dialog which will appear.
Choose the 'Install QL rom' command from the 'File' menu. The program automatically scans the disk looking for the rom image, copies it to the folder containing the Q-emuLator application, and remembers the rom file name for the following times.
Getting the rom from Internet
If you have Internet access, a QL rom image can be found at the following address:
To install the rom, just put it in the same folder as the Q-emuLator application, then launch Q-emuLator and choose the 'QL Configuration…' command from the 'QL' menu. Now you are in the QL Configuration dialog; click on the first 'Select…' button, double click on the rom file name in the file selection dialog and finally press the 'OK' button to exit the QL Configuration dialog.
Your first emulation session
Installation is now complete. You can start your first emulation session choosing the 'Start' command from the 'QL' menu.
If you don't have the function keys remember that you can emulate them by pressing the command key and the function key number; e.g.: command+1 for F1.
Enjoy it!
Please read the Q-emuLator Lite manual: it explains how to configure Q-emuLator and how to read and write files from/to your Macintosh hard disk and floppies. It also explains the differences between Q-emuLator Lite and the commercial package.
